How to Evaluate Your PhD Thesis Before Submission

A practical pre-submission PhD thesis evaluation checklist covering argument, methodology, analysis, coherence, contribution and examiner risk.

1. Check that the research questions, objectives and claimed contribution still align with the study you actually completed.
2. Read across chapters for contradictions. Concepts introduced in the literature review should connect meaningfully to methodology, analysis and discussion.
3. Reassess methodology as an argument, not a description: justify design, sampling, measurement or data generation, analytical choices, validity or trustworthiness and limitations.
4. Trace every important conclusion back to evidence. Quantitative claims should agree with reported statistics; qualitative interpretations should be visibly grounded in the analytical process.
5. Read as an examiner. Ask why each major methodological choice was made, what alternatives existed, what is genuinely original and what the study cannot legitimately claim.
6. Prioritise substantive weaknesses before presentation. Resolve contradictions, unsupported conclusions, methodological gaps and analytical errors first.
